Outline Demand for the environmentally friendly LCDs for industrial use that play a major role in Kyocera's liquid crystal business has been increasing in line with demand for other electronic equipment. Kyocera achieved an industry first in September 2004 when it successfully commercialized liquid crystal displays that comply with the RoHS Directive (restriction on the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment). Kyocera is introducing LEDs as the light source of the backlights to create products that are more environmentally friendly, and developing totally mercury-free LCDs. By integrating the company’s technical achievement in LCDs with the excellent properties which LEDs possess, Kyocera is to develop and commercialize LCDs that carry LED backlights, which are available in sizes ranging from 3.5" to 10.4". These new products are to be released sequentially from September onward. *Mercury in compact fluorescent lamps not exceeding 5 mg per lamp is exempted from application of the RoHS Directive
Features 1. Totally mercury-free, environmentally-friendly products While the CFL used for conventional backlights contains mercury, Kyocera achieves totally mercury-free, more environmentally-friendly products using LEDs as the light source of backlights.
2. No need for inverters, and a reduction in consumption power There is no need for the inverters that have been essential for CFLs. A high-voltage power source is not required, and it is simply to obtain safety standard certification. Since there is no inverter, noise measures no longer have to be taken.
3. High reliability in the backlights While CFLs are glass tubes, on-chip LEDs are introduced to improve vibration and shock resistance on the backlights.
4. Responding to the low-temperature environment With CFLs, it takes considerable time to turn on the lamp in the low-temperature environment. LEDs improve performance in starting up in the low-temperature environment.
5. Flexible luminance adjustment LEDs enable flexible luminance adjustment to the driving current. The display of lower luminance mode is suitable for the use in dim work space. And as it saves the power consumption, the display of lower luminance mode also contributes to extend battery life of mobile electronic device or equipment.
