22 March 2012

Wandsworth Council was awarded the Public Sector PEA Award 2012 for its Greener Borough Initiative. The PEA Award was presented to Michael Singham MCIWM, Waste Policy Manager at the 2nd Annual PEA Awards ceremony held in London’s South Bank on Wednesday 21st March.

Michael said: “We were surprised to be shortlisted for this award and very pleased indeed to be named the winner. Our colleagues and Councillors are delighted with this recognition of our efforts with Our Greener Borough, a scheme which we have run successfully over the last five years.”

Our Greener Borough is a Council initiative set up to help reduce Wandsworth’s environmental impacts. IT is made up of individual schemes focusing on schools, residents, businesses and community groups. The scheme comprises various strands of activity including Green Pledge Schemes, a Bi-Annual Green Champions Award and the Wandsworth Eco Fund which gives grants for community eco-projects. Wandsworth Council also has staff who are designated Green Champions who have dedicated time each month to focus on themes such as reducing waste, improve procurement and deliver green IT.

Tracey Rawling Church, Director of Brand and Reputation at KYOCERA Document Solutions added: “We’re delighted to support the PEA Awards for the second year and we were really impressed by the enthusiasm and energy shown by all the entrants to the Public Sector category. Wandsworth Council is a truly deserving winner for its Our Greener Borough initiative but Nottingham County Council was a close runner-up with its Nottinghamshire Biodiversity Action Group and we were very impressed by the calibre of PEA Award entrants this year.”
